You get to be my age, you do what I did and do for a living, you see it all, or you very much think you have. You get jaded sometimes. Almost half a century in the business of sports broadcasting, and being inside the sausage factory, you get used to things. You get callouses. You’re not surprised all that much because nothing can surprise you. But you know what’s possible because you’ve been there and seen it. You know that every game, match, and series is an opportunity for a cosmic moment. And you do get it in small doses. You get these regular moments of a wonderful play or a close finish. But this - this - what this World Series gives you and me and all of us - is a comet to watch and enjoy. And even knowing the comet doesn’t last, and will eventually flame out, the too-brief brilliant light it shines is this unifying, glorious thing that takes us away from our daily cares - and inspires us - if only for a few hours. It also very much provides connection for us to others enjoying the same moment and experiencing the same feelings.

Now, that’s not very profound - unless you think there are people out there who need to be taken away from their daily cares and need inspiration and connection every now and then.

I sure as hell do anyway.
