The Emcee and Sally Bowles

Before Jaquin Phoenix’s Joker, before Heath Ledger’s Joker, which he based partially on “A Clockwork Orange’s” Alex DeLarge, and before DeLarge, there was the Emcee from Cabaret.

Like those characters, we see his hard turn to darkness, and his playground isn’t Gotham, or a dystopian Kubric-envisioned London, but a much bleaker place, a beleaguered Berlin in the 1930’s, and the hedonistic “Kit Kat Club”. It’s been a party, and the party’s about to end.
